PROVINCIAL SELECTION
LBOA Provincial Selection Process - Both Saskatchewan and Alberta
Opening Statement: We are very fortunate being a ‘border city’ officials’ association. As such, we are encouraged to submit referee nominations to both the Saskatchewan High School Provincial Championships and the Alberta High School Provincial Championships. This policy was developed to provide all LBOA members with an understanding of the process that the Selection Committee will employ in recommending officials to these events.
Process:
-
Interested members are required to complete ‘expression of interest’ google form by required date
-
Post season selection committee (FOUR people total - 2 exec and 2 regular members - determined by volunteering at AGM) will review all submissions. A provincial candidate must get a majority of votes to 'get on the list.' Getting on the list DOES NOT guarantee a nomination. It is expected that if any of the committee is in a position of conflict, that they will remove themselves from that aspect of voting.
To at least 'get on the list': General requirements for any post-season assignment:
-
You are a 'member in good standing' (no behavioural / disciplinary / professionalism issues throughout the season). You have represented the LBOA the right way up to that point in the season.
-
You have written the national level one or two exam, and received at least an 80% (SABO) or a 70% for 1A / 2A appointment (ABOA), or an 80% for 3A / 4A appointment (ABOA).
-
You will or already have, worked a minimum of 25 games during the season for the LBOA.
-
You have demonstrated an acceptable level of competency through game performances and LBOA evaluation / mentoring / partner observation.
For SK Hoopla (all levels)
-
Generally Saskatchewan requires names earlier than Alberta.
-
All interested candidates' names will be put forward in alphabetical order for consideration to the regional branch
-
Final decision for placement will be made by SABO. Many years, this decision on SK nominees is made before we are required to send our Alberta names forward.
For AB Provincials (all levels)
If the pool of qualified candidates exceeds the awarded spots at both provincials, then the following criteria will be used:
CRITERIA (Hierarchal):
-
Officials already selected to participate at Hoopla in any particular year will relinquish their opportunity to represent LBOA at that year’s ASAA provincials (and vice-versa if applicable).
-
Officials must be currently demonstrating a commitment to personal development by:
-
attending recognized official’s camps
-
participating at provincial or regional / local clinics
-
pursuit of higher quality games WITHIN THE LBOA
-
seeking external feedback from LBOA members and provincial evaluators.
-
seeking leadership opportunities within LBOA and ABOA / SABO
3. The Association seeks to be as fair as possible to all qualified members:
-
An official can represent the LBOA for two consecutive years (at any level), but the Selection committee will give that same official secondary consideration on the third year of their nomination
-
If a candidate official does not receive a provincial spot in any given year, they should receive priority for the following year as long as they continue their skill development, and qualify at the appropriate level.
4. Volunteering for LBOA – candidates who have done more of the following will be given priority.
-
volunteering for the board
-
mentoring, referee coaching
5. Years of service – someone that has been in good standing with the organization longer will be given priority.
SUMMARY:
In the case when the selection committee has two equally-qualified candidates (after the above criteria has been applied), the committee will decide which candidate will be recommended to provide the most positive outcome for both officials. Qualified ‘alternates’ will be identified when required.
