EVALUATION PROGRAM

At both the USport and ACAC levels, game evaluations and post-game analyses are performed routinely.  It is simply a part of the job.  Games are taped and streamed online for the world to watch and critique.  We need to ensure that we are at our best every time we step on the floor.

The LBOA membership should welcome the opportunity to be formally evaluated during their games.  Evaluations play an integral role in the development and advancement of each official.  We need to get used to them.  We need to be able to officiate at our best while they are taking place.  We cannot be intimidated by the process.  Evaluations occur at every game of each high school provincial championship!

New in the 2019-20 season, the LBOA will now conduct ONE (1) written evaluation for each member of the Association, during a game that is perceived by the Executive as appropriate to the current level of the official.

This process will be the ‘next step’ of our newly announced “Observation Program.”

Evaluators, or in other words “Referee Coaches (RC)” for the Association will be approached and announced by the Executive before or by November 1st, 2019.

The selection of the game that is evaluated will be at the discretion of the LBOA, unless a request for a specific contest has been put forth by the candidate official, with proper notice (one week minimum) provided.

This LBOA evaluation will not constitute an NOCP status / level upgrade evaluation.  These are two very distinct processes.  NOCP level upgrades are much more comprehensive.

The cost of each evaluation will be $25.00.  This money will go directly to compensating the Evaluator for:

  • Observing the game and taking notes

  • Speaking with the official post-game

  • Providing a written summary of the official’s performance in the game

The LBOA will deduct the cost of the evaluation through the Arbiter payment process.

Officials that are considered first or second year LBOA members are exempt from paying the evaluation fee, but the RC will still be paid for their work.  This funding will come from the LBOA coffers.

Members should understand that being an RC has a ‘volunteer’ component to it.  The fee attached to this process does come close to covering the time and effort required by the Evaluator to do a proper job. Please be open-minded / respectful of the process and feedback.  All kinds of feedback is generally beneficial.  It is the opinion of one individual.  In the end, the goal of the program is to help officials get better at their craft.

Self-evaluation is important too.  Where possible the use of video analysis of games is critical to the long-term development and success of officials.  We encourage our members to ask a friend or family member to come to a game and videotape portions of the contest, for review afterward.  This can easily be done with a cell phone!

Completed evaluation forms will be shared with the LBOA Executive and Assignor, and stored in the administrative files of our Association Secretary.

Those officials interested in having multiple evaluations throughout the season should contact the Director of Education – Kaitlin Harman (lboa.education@gmail.com) - to make those arrangements.

Online form submissions will be available in the 2020-21 season.
