OBSERVATION PROGRAM
Due to the fact that we are a small association with members travelling from towns all around Lloydminster – some from significant distances, we have decided to modify our previous “Mentoring Program” to now reflect a more generic “Observation” Program.
Referee’s will no longer be ‘paired’ with another member to provide support throughout the season. Rather, we will all try and help each other to become better officials, by watching various member referees and providing feedback in an informal manner. We should all be comfortable with other members observing our games and getting advice.
Senior members of the Association will be asked to attend high school or junior high games during the season to observe the officiating crew. Observations will be coordinated when it’s most convenient for the senior member to attend. For example, ACAC officials may choose to be an observer before or after their college commitment.
The details of the program are as follows:
-
Observers will be approved by the LBOA Executive each season
-
Observers will be assigned to specific games or events by the LBOA Assignor ~ OR ~ Observers can just show up to games that are scheduled at a convenient time for the Observer to attend.
-
Observers will be volunteers
-
Observers will not receive travel compensation
-
There will be no expectation that observers will stay for the full duration of any game
-
Game observations will not be ‘evaluations’
-
There will be no expectation that the observers will provide written feedback to the crew.
-
Observers can provide feedback in a variety of ways:
-
Support the official(s) directly on court
-
Speak to officials at time outs and end of quarters
-
Speak to officials at conclusion of the game
-
Speak to officials by text / email / phone after game
-
-
It may not be possible to have all members of the Association observed during the season
-
Members can request to any member of the Executive to be observed
-
It is expected that any member that has performed an observation will advise all members of the Executive and the Assignor that it occurred. The Assignor will be required to track the number of observations performed by any senior member, as well as the number of observations received by each official.
-
Participants in this program should be receptive to all kinds of commentary. Please do not take any criticism personally. The program is designed to help LBOA officials get better at the craft.
