Personally

Be in the best physical shape you can be

Make a commitment to “leaving your personal life” outside the gym while you change into your uniform

Pledge to maintaining a strong understanding of the rules, and the appropriate application of the rules

Good standing with the Association – do not accept/referee basketball games that were not assigned by the LBOA
Administrative

Commit to attending the Association’s preseason training clinics

Properly establish all appropriate details in Arbiter Assigning Software (arbitersports.com) – update your blocks

If a cancellation of an accepted assignment is necessary, please provide 48-hours’ notice to Assignor – unless the cancellation is an emergency. Do your best to not ‘turn-back’ accepted, or decline non-blocked assignments.

Check email and text messages every day

Communicate with your partner at least 24-hours in advance of the game

Know the details of your daily game assignments

Switching game assignments with a fellow official is not permitted.Please contact the LBOA Assignor.

Determine the required driving distance to each of your game venues

Take a copy of the FIBA rule book with you to your games

Inform LBOA Assignor if your partner is a ‘no-show
In Competition

Be on time – 20-minutes before scheduled tip-off. If you are running late, please communicate immediately to the LBOA Assignor, and if possible your partner.

Clear the playing surface, properly position the scorer’s table and benches, and surrounding perimeter clear

Preparation of score keepers and conveying their responsibilities

Verify that all jewellery is removed for the game, and that all athlete accessories are safely being worn

Look the part – be clean shaven; ensure your uniform is clean and pressed; appropriate footwear and whistle

Firm understanding of rule modifications for specific leagues / tournaments

Proper floor positioning, mechanics and signals - communication must be loud and clear (whistle and voice)

Be unbiased and fair to both teams and all players / coaches
-
Demonstrate effort for the full duration – be prepared to referee the complete game
-
Maintain a high level of professionalism throughout the game – you are an LBOA representative
-
Choose to use appropriate language / verbage
-
Be respectful to all people associated with the game: athletes, coaches, table crew, spectators, gymnasium coordinators
-
Be open to feedback from your peers

Never be publicly critical of an officiating colleague – in person, electronically, by phone or social media

Awareness of our conversations off the floor / away from facility, pertaining to peers, teams, coaches, players, etc.
